tonight at 6:00, new video of a frightening journey underground. metro riders evacuating after their train runs off the tracks. a derailment caused by our extreme heat. 1095 degrees today. one of the hottest days d.c. has ever seen and thousands are still without air conditioning. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. this long heat spell has been dangerous and deadly from the midwest to the northeast, at least 25 deaths are blame and the triple-digit temperature. ten of those deaths in virginia. another ten in maryland. and we're not out of the woods yet. chuck bell is in storm center 4.

chuck, more heat coming and potential for more dangerous storms in the future? >> unfortunately, yes. thunderstorms up across parts of central pennsylvania headed towards philadelphia, and northeastern maryland. we'll keep a close eye on those. meanwhile, we're all blistered under the heat. 102 degree, that's the 6:00 temperature at national airport. still 100 in winchester, 100 in frederick, maryland, 102 in waldorf. and 105 officially at reagan national today. smashed the old record of 102 set just two years ago. baltimore, bwi airport, 103. dulles, 101. all records for the day. and this makes it one of the five hottest days ever. in washington. our hottest day since august of 1997. and only one degree shy of the 106 that we've only made twice before. the heat will be breaking soon. i'll give thaw in the seven-day forecast. jim. >> can't come soon enough, chuck.

thank you. that record-breaking heat could be felt everywhere. including in al sunexandria. quiet there today. some opted to stay inside, inside with air conditioning. in downtown silver spring, the fountain was back in business. it had been out of service during part of the heat wave, but today, there you see it cooling visitors off once again. bet that felt good. the heat did not stop the smithsonian folklife festival on the national mall. visitors were able to duck in and out of the tents for a little shade or to grab a drink. some people brought umbrellas. today is also chuck brown tribute day. several bands honoring the late godfather of go-go by playing his music. this record-breaking heat has been especially unbear for residents in south washington. pepco restored power to everyone in the district, but there's one building that's still in the dark tonight. derrick ward has more on how they're coping in this dangerous weather. >> reporter: this building on

ridge place southeast stands by itself both physically and notoriously for its residents. the only ones on this block still without power after last week's storm. even with the 100-degree-plus temperature, it's cooler outside than inside. >> it's unbearable. inhumane, and i'm just asking for help. >> reporter: while this pole is skew and not completely cleared, utility workers were able to get the servicemen to the outside of the apartment building. that's as far as they could go. >> someone had stolen all the wire out of the -- out of that side of the building. >> reporter: residents say they've complained to the landlord to no avail. >> he told me he would have someone here thursday. thursday comes, no one's here. it's now saturday. i called him this morning. he can't get anybody to come until monday. >> reporter: so this weekend will be just like last weekend. >> it's difficult to breathe. you know. you sweat profusely. >> reporter: she has health issues making it even more of a

problem. >> everybody is at risk for extreme heat. >> reporter: this doctor has study the physiology of extreme heat with special focus on the elderly. >> they'd say we'll used to the hot weather, but it's difficult now. as a seen your, your body's, it's harder to thermal regulate. >> reporter: limit time outdoors and make sure indoors is not as bad or worse. with no power or air conditioning, these folks say the city told them they would only kqualify if they were already on public assistance, but they work. the doctor says it speaks to a need to rethink the way municipalities treat extreme heat events, if this were a freeze or snowstorm, would the same thinking going on on ridge place? >> treat it like it's a hurricane, like it's extreme cold. >> reporter: derrick wartd, news 4. stay with news 4 for continuing coverage of the record-breaking heat and visit nbcwashington.com for chuck's latest forecast as well as a list of cooling centers.

the heat caused a metro train to derail yesterday near the west high hyattsville station. the long, dark journey for passenger whose had to take the tunnel to get out. the latest on what went wrong and what metro is doing to keep riders safe in this excessive heat. darcy? >> reporter: yesterday's derailment is affecting service through metro systems across the area. that's because metro has ordered all of the trains that operate above ground to keep it under 35 miles per hour. that may add some time to your trip. then some stations like here at west hyattsville station, they're offering shuttle buses while the track repairwork continue continues. >> a couple more -- >> reporter: this video taking by a gazette reporter walking through the darkened tunnel yesterday afternoon on the green line train when it derailed. >> shifted from side to side.

and going extremely fast. >> reporter: dozens of riders were evacuated, and in the heat of the day had to walk up several flights of stairs to get out. >> it was -- kind of crazy hearing about it. she was out there in the heat and stuff. i just told metro, get it together. be rand stuff so people don't have to sit out in this heat, take shuttle buss to get to where they want. >> reporter: metro officials confirm a heat kink was the likely cause of the derailment near the west hyattsville station in prince george's county. three kacars derailed. does it make you concerned it can happen again. >> yes. catch the train could work every day and it kind of is a problem, but -- they should handle it. >> reporter: green line service between prince george's is suspended, metro re-routes cars and repairs damaged track. metro is operating free shuttle

firefighters worked through the heat to battle a house fire in montgomery county. it happened today on ashton road in olney. homeowner says friday's storm tripped his circuit. power went back on. when he went to flip the circuit

every year. justin bieber's p.r. reps are disputing claim hess was driving over 100 miles per hour an a california freeway. he was ticketed for driving in excess of 65 miles an hour. he said he was being chased by paparazzi. 911 was called after bieber passed him on the freeway. >> passed me as an excessive rate of speed. i approximated 100 miles per hour. weaving in and out of traf a number of other cars, five or six, following. it looks like a chase, a police chase. >> a bieber rep says the council sman trying to get publicity. bieber was issued a ticket last year for going 90 miles per hour in his range rover. and trying to find the man who came to her rescue. susan riley driving her toyota on georgetown road when a tree came crashing down. she was trapped inside at the height of the storm.

then, a stranger appeared out of nowhere. >> and he and i worked myself out of the front seat window. >> reporter: the good samaritan wasn't finished. he then drove her to the hospital for treatment. rhymy had a splintered rib, two black eyes and needed 40 staples for a cut in her head. shep asked a nurse to write down the man's name, but it was lost in the confusion from that night. pepco says 99% of customers who lost power last week have it back. just 100 customer, still waiting. bge has 600 still in the dark, mostly in the baltimore area. dominion virginia only about 50 customers without electricity. the numbers may be small but the people among those numbers -- >> impact almost beyond words for how bad would it be to go -- no air conditioning through

argue bably one of the hottest stretches of weather we've had. we've kept records since 1874. this last ten days, looks like it will go down to the hottest 10 to 11-day stretch on record here in washington. another day over 100 today. that equals three day fls a row. the all-time record for 100-degree days in a row is four. if we can do it tomorrow we'll tie the record, going back to july of 1930. outside today, record-shattering heat again. 105 in washington. our second highest temperature ever recorded. we've been 105 two other times before today, and we've been 106 twice. this was, as recordkeeping goes, itting whos like about the fifth hottest day in washington. outside now at national airport, another uncomfortable evening. still 102 at the airport. the only tiny little break we've gotten to date is that with all the intense heat, the dew point temperatures mixed down into the

50s and 60s. so humidity now only 25%. so there is no heat index now, because the humidities are too low. it's like a desert, dry heat. not that that makes it feel any better. still the upper 90s to near 100 pretty much everywhere. the record at national airport, we've gone ten days in a row 95 or higher. that's a record. three days in a row, 100 or higher. the first time that's happened since 1993. and, again, the all-time record for 100-degree days in a row is four set back in 1930. so as you make your plans for this evening, staying hot, turning a little more humid after the sun goes down. no relief in town, in the urban center. still better than 90 degrees at 11:00 tonight. no rain on our radar just around here yet. a brand new severe thunderstorm watch does include parts of northern maryland. that goes into the late night evening hours. most of the action, most of the severe weather threat is headed into southeastern pennsylvania, but some of these lone storms up here could graze the northern

parts of frederick county, northern carroll county, we'll keep an eye on these carefully over the next couple of hour, and another risk for strong to severe thunderstorms coming up for tomorrow. all of this yellow shaded here, that is a slight risk for severe weather coming up tomorrow. so be ready for another hot and potentially active weather day. so a miserable night tonight in town temperatures staying well above 80 degrees. storm chances increasing after about lunchtime tomorrow, and some of the storms tomorrow i do think will reach severe limits. the only good news is i think the increase of storm chances and louds may hold us bechloe 100 degrees tomorrow and much, much cooler air settling in monday and lasting through the rest of the week. headed out to the beach, water temperature 80 degrees. 92 tomorrow. low 80s monday and tuesday. for us overnight, partly cloudy, scattered thunderstorms mainly northern and northern eastern maryland. lows 75 to 83. tomorrow, hot and humid. strong to severe thunderstorms likely tomorrow afternoon and
